In a first of its kind initiative, the district panchayat has decided to roll out a mobile gasifier-based crematorium to address space shortage for funeral faced by landless people.

The annual budget presented by the panchayat on Monday outlined the need to procure a crematorium on wheels. Sources in the panchayat told The Hindu that a vehicle fitted with a gas chamber to cremate body would be procured by the panchayat using additional plan fund sanctioned by the State government for Corporations and district panchayats.

A body would be cremated within two hours in the mobile crematorium using one LPG cylinder. The vehicle would be sent to places as per request. The chamber would be taken out of the vehicle for cremation, said an official with the district panchayat.

The cost for a mobile unit will be around Rs.50 lakh. The panchayat has also plans to construct gasifier-based crematoriums in 20 grama panchayats
