MLA to take up Nemom rail project with Union Minister

June 10, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 01:08 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Senior BJP leader and legislator O. Rajagopal on Thursday discussed the development of Nemom railway station and the Rs.250-crore coaching terminal at Nemom with the railway authorities.

Mr. Rajagopal, who represents Nemom constituency, had detailed discussion with Divisional Railway Manager Prakash Butani in this regard at the divisional rail headquarters.

The rail connectivity to the upcoming Vizhinjam international multi-purpose deepwater seaport also came up for discussion. Mr. Rajagopal told Mr. Butani that he would meet Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu soon to discuss the project.

The project for a coaching terminal on 12.14 hectares of land owned by Railways near the Nemom railway station is yet to take off. The project, aimed at decongestion of the Thiruvananthapuram Central station, had figured in the 2008 and 2011 Railway budgets. But, Railways have not been able to make much progress. The coaching terminal at Nemom was mooted taking into account the lack of platforms to handle trains at the Central station here and the satellite terminal at Kochuveli.

As the land available is in the shape of a triangle, another 28.33 hectares have to be acquired.
