The Central government should announce a package similar to the tsunami package in the aftermath of the devastation left behind by Ockhi cyclone, V.S. Sivakumar MLA has demanded.

The State government should take the initiative for getting such a package, Mr. Sivakumar said on Monday.

The disaster had left many fishermen dead, hundreds of fisherfolk missing, and several hosues in coastal belts and fishing equipment damaged. The relief package should be announced after assessing these losses and should include a compensation of ₹25 lakh for the family of the deceased and ₹5 lakh for those under treatment in hospitals, Mr. Sivakumar said.

The dependent of destitute families should be given jobs in the institutions under the Fisheries Department, he added.

The MLA also stressed on the need for recruiting eligible and experienced members from the fisherfolk into departments like Coast Guard, Marine Enforcement, and Coastal Police to prevent such disasters.

Measures for implementing the previous government’s Poonthura-Valiathura fishing harbour project and building of a sea wall should also be taken.
