The construction work of the new international airport terminal here, which is in the final stages of completion, was reviewed by Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, M. Vijayakumar, on Tuesday.
Mr. Vijayakumar visited the airport with Thiruvananthapuram West MLA, V, Surendran Pillai, Mayor, Jayan Babu, District Collector, Sanjay Kaul and top officials.
Airport Director N. Nagaraj and General Manager (projects), Malhotra, received the minister. The team of officers, who accompanied the minister, discussed the progress of the work of the new terminal with the airport officials.
The new international terminal is expected to be opened by this December. All facilites including three aero bridges would be built as part of the terminal. The Airport Authority of India was spending Rs. 245.58 crore for the development of the new terminal in the first phase, the minister said. The terminal, covering 24,000 sq km area and having a 19 metre height, has five elevators, 18 check-in counters, 20 immigration counters, 11 customs counters and parking facilities for 600 cars, Mr. Vijayakumar said.
The State government is constructing a six-lane passage from the National Highway bypass to the airport, at a cost of Rs. 22 crore. Talks for acquiring another 93 acre land for the second phase of the development of the airport were progressing, he added.
