Minister invited to Barcelona

May 25, 2010 03:46 pm | Updated 03:46 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Spanish Ambassador to India Ion de la Riva has extended an invitation to Minister for Ports M. Vijayakumar to visit Spain to probe the possibilities of Kerala setting up its deepwater container transhipment port at Vizhinjam in partnership with the Barcelona Port Authority.

The Ambassador extended the invitation during a meeting he had with Mr. Vijayakumar here on Monday.

Shashi Tharoor, MP, also attended the meeting.

In a press release, Mr. Tharoor's office said the Spanish Ambassador had expressed the view that it would be helpful if the Ports Minister were to see the working of the Barcelona port in the event of Kerala deciding to have a tie-up for setting up the Vizhinjam port.

Mr. Riva said such a tie-up would go a long way in promoting business relations between his country and India, the press release said.
