Sangeetha, the female jaguar who was seriously injured in an attack by a male at the city zoo on Wednesday, is in a stable condition, zoo vet Jacob Alexander has said.
He was briefing Minister for Zoos P.K. Jayalakshmi who visited the zoo on Friday.
It required 67 stitches to reattach the badly mangled forelimb of the female jaguar. The dressing on the injured limb would be changed every other day, Dr. Alexander told the Minister.
Zoo officials said Sangeetha was attacked on account of her lukewarm response to the male’s attempt at mating.
Ms. Jayalakshmi was informed by zoo officials that the lion Akash that was undergoing physiotherapy to counter birth defects was showing signs of progress. The physiotherapy was being done with the help of hip belts.
The Minister was also told that the tiger Rahul who had been suffering from trypanosomiasis was now completely healthy.
Later, Ms. Jayalakshmi released into cages the chicks of golden pheasant and oriental darter that had hatched at the zoo.
The Minister directed the zoo officials to ensure that adequate precautions were taken to prevent the spread of communicable diseases among the animals.
