The government will, in the next financial year, provide sufficient funds to the Government Medical College Hospital to construct a multi-storeyed building on the MCH campus to provide faculty accommodation.
The government decided to step in to provide funds to the tune of over Rs.1.5 crore to the Medical College Hospital (MCH) in compensation for the land that it had handed over to the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) for its expansion programme.
This was decided at a meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Wednesday, which was attended by the Medical College Principal Ramdas Pisharody.
The SCTIMST had purchased 83 cents of land from the MCH to construct two multi-storeyed blocks, as part of its expansion programme.
However, the money paid for the land was deposited in the Revenue account, which meant that the funds could not be transferred to the MCH, which necessitated that the government compensate this amount.
Rajeev Sadanandan, Principal Secretary, Health, thus asked the MCH authorities to submit a proposal for construction of a multi-storeyed block so that the funds could be provided for this purpose.
Insufficient facility
Even though as per Medical Council of India's regulations, the MCH requires to have specific number of faculty quarters, at present, the college does not have sufficient accommodation for doctors or other staff. The land that was sold to SCTIMST housed some old A type faculty quarters.
With thwe MCH's 110-acre campus being shared by SCTIMST and the Regional Cancer Centre, construction space has been at a premium here for the MCH's development.
The MCH authorities said in consultation with all concerned, a proposal would be submitted to the government for the construction of a multi-storeyed block on a 65-cent plot near the RCC.
