P.C. Mahalanobis, pioneer in statistical research in the country, was remembered on his 124th birth anniversary here. Chairing a seminar on ‘Recent trends in statistical theory and applications,’ organised by the Department of Statistics to mark National Statistics Day, P.G. Lesitha recalled the role played by Mahalanobis in the nation’s Plan process.

“Although he was a physicist, he contributed immensely to statistics. He was a pioneer, from starting the first journal of statistics to setting up a research institute and playing a role as a member of the second Planning Commission,” she said.
