Lights off tonight to mark Earth Hour

Earth Hour, a global campaign by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature to create awareness of global warming and climate change, will be observed in the city on Saturday. On the day, non-essential lights will be switched off for an hour from 8.30 p.m.

A public campaign was held in front of the Secretariat on Thursday and a similar campaign was held in front of Saphalyam complex at Palayam on Friday. A cyclethon on Manaveeyam Road, interaction with early morning walkers, sand sculpture, painting competitions and musical performance on the Shanghumughom beach form part of the events slated to be held on Saturday.

Renjan Mathew Varghese, State director, WWF-India, said the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and Energy Management Cell had provided 5000 CFL s to be distributed to the public during the campaign.
