LGBT rights get a push

Forum for LGBT rights to be formed

On Sunday, Queerythm, an organisation that has been working among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) community in the city for over six months, will formally come into being to coincide with the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.

The day is observed around the world on May 17 against rights violation of sexual and gender minorities.

In the city, the day will be organised in association with the Mumbai-based The Humsafar Trust at the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum at PMG.

Besides academic session, an exhibition of books and magazines on LGBTIQ issues and a series on history of the queer movement in the State will be held.

Documentary

The programme will get under way with a screening of ‘Avalilekkulla Dooram’ (‘The journey to her,’ a documentary directed by P. Abhijith.

A panel discussion will be held on ‘Media and gender justice and queer questioning’ involving film director Syamaprasad, film director and journalist Vidhu Vincent, and transgender activist Soorya Abhilash among others.

A number of LGBT activists will take part in panel discussions on ‘Kerala society and homophobia’ and ‘Visibility of sexual minorities,’ and ‘The Heterosexual State’ will be held in the afternoon session.

A number of political and social leaders will take part in the inaugural function in the evening.

Murugesan Sivasubramanian, Project Director, The Humsafar Trust, will deliver the presidential address.

Renju Renjimar, celebrity make-up artist, will be the chief guest.

To be honoured

Winners of TG Athletic Meet, participants from Malappuram and Kannur districts, and others will be honoured on the occasion.

Cultural events by community members will also be held.

Queerythm aims at supporting the commmunity members’ academic pursuits and in leading a rewarding life.

It will tie up with organisations working for LGBTIQ rights within the country and abroad.
