Left’s women brigade in the new Assembly

Five from the CPI(M), three from the CPI

The 14{+t}{+h}Kerala Assembly, to be sworn in shortly, will have eight women members, all representing the ruling Left Democratic Front. Five members of the women’s contingent will be debutants in the House. Five of them will be from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and three from the Communist Party of India.

Kollam is the only district in Kerala to be represented by more than one woman in the new Assembly. While Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Thrissur and Kannur districts returned one woman legislator each, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kasaragod districts will have no representation of woman MLAs in the House.

The CPI(M) contingent of women includes Aisha Potti who won from Kottarakara and Mercykutty Amma from Kundara, both in Kollam district, Veena George from Aranmula in Pathanamthitta, Pratibha Hari from Kayamkulam in Alappuzha and K.K. Shylaja Teacher from Koothuparamba in Kannur. The CPI women’s brigade includes C.K. Asha who was returned from Vaikom in Kottayam district, E.S. Bijimol from Peerumade in Idukki, and Geetha Gopi from Nattika in Thrissur district.

Aisha Potti, E.S. Bijimol and Geetha Gopi are sitting MLAs while the rest are debutants.
