LDF to question budget validity in court

March 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 10:20 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) has decided to question in court the validity of the budget presented by Kerala Finance Minister K.M. Mani.

Briefing reporters after an LDF State committee meeting here on Monday, convener Vaikom Viswan said the alliance would boycott Mr. Mani’s public functions and block his way whenever he ventures out to attend public functions. The Opposition would not take part in the discussions of the Assembly Subject Committees on the budget proposals.

The alliance, he said, would also organise marches in all district headquarters against the assault on Opposition MLAs, particularly the misbehaviour towards women MLAs, by UDF legislators and watch and ward staff in the Assembly on the budget day.

Opposition MLAs who were attacked by the treasury bench members and the watch and ward staff inside the Assembly would lodge complaints with the police. Coming down heavily on the ruling alliance MLAs and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Mr. Viswam said their behaviour smacked of ‘feudal’ attitude. Besides attacking the women MLAs ‘with sexual intent,’ the ruling front MLAs had also launched a ‘sexist’ tirade against the women legislators.

When the women MLAs were being attacked in the House, the Chief Minister had remained totally unconcerned about what was going on in the House.

Mr. Viswan said the Opposition would not let the UDF leaders and legislators get away with such actions.
