KWA gets Rs.3.72 crore under AMRUT

May 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:25 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has received administrative sanction to carry out works worth Rs.3.72 crore to improve the sewage system under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

The sewerage wing of the KWA has decided to utilise the funds to revamp the pumping system at Kuriathy so that raw sewage could be pumped uninterruptedly to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Muttathara.

Sewage from areas such as Kowdiar, Vellayambalam, Vazhuthacaud, Karamana, Thampanoor, Palayam and Fort reaches the pumping station at Kuriathy and from there it is pumped to the STP. A senior official with the KWA said the frequent failure of the pump sets established in 2004 at the pumping station had often led to discharge of raw sewage to the Parvathy Puthanar.

The inflow of raw sewage from the pumping station to the canal, along with lack of sewerage connectivity on the banks of the Parvathy Puthanar, is considered the main cause of pollution.

The STP, which has a capacity to treat 107-million litres of waste a day, is currently running at around 30 per cent capacity, mainly due to the lack of sewerage lines in a major part of the city. A part of the fund would also be utilised to improve the sewage pumping system at Mudavanmugal, Pattoor, Plamoodu and Murinjapalam, the official said.

“We will allot the works immediately after the elections. The revamp of the pumping system at Kuriathy will help address overflow of sewage at Kuriathy and Fort areas,” the official said.
