Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti staged a dharna in front of the Secretariat, protesting against the Union Cabinet’s decision to allow 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail. KVVES District president Peringamala Ramachandran inaugurated the dharna.
“By allowing FDI in retail sector, traders and small retailers in the country will be forced to close down leading to large scale unemployment,” Mr. Ramachandran said. He added that KVVES would not allow foreign retailers like WalMart to do business in the State.
“Small traders, farmers who depend on retail trade, head-load workers and the consumers will have to suffer if the major foreign retailers came to India,” he said.
Mr. Ramachandran said that the KVVES was ready to spread awareness about the concerns about allowing large foreign retailers to open outlets in the Country.
KVVES District General Secretary Y. Vijayan and District Treasurer Kamalalayam Suku were also present.
