The City Corporation will deploy Kudumbasree workers, beginning Monday, to carry out ‘at-source' treatment of garbage in the capital city.
Wherever there is space, the workers would bury bio-degradable garbage on the premises of the buildings concerned. Otherwise they would take the garbage to a pre-designated locality in the vicinity and bury the garbage. Plastic waste would not be collected under any circumstances.
The City Corporation has opened a crisis management cell which would coordinate garbage removal work in the city. The cell can be reached on phone. (Nos: 94964 34517 or 0471-2320821- extension 703).
Mayor K. Chandrika told a press conference here on Saturday that the people should notify the cell if they found garbage dumped anywhere in the city.
In the case of large shops and other commercial establishments garbage would be removed and taken away for landfills on payment of a fee. This would be done only if the establishment concerned does not have space to bury its garbage.
Plots identified
The corporation has identified 22 plots of land in the city where garbage would be buried till the time garbage treatment plants are set up. These include the Vizhinjam harbour area; the bund colony road at Kannammoola; the medical college compound road; the corporation property at Vettakkulam; Chenthitta; the mental health centre; Vattiyoorkkavu; the kariavattom college campus; the central school compound; All Saints Junction; the Chithranjali studio complex; housing board land at Nanthancode; the Manjalikkulam ground; the civil station premises, Kudappanakkunnu; the city school premises, Palayam; the Central Jail compound, Poojappura; the Sewage Farm, Poonthura, and the land behind the flower market at Anayara.
Garbage would be buried here in a manner that does not cause any inconvenience to people. “This garbage would only make these plots of land more fertile,” Ms. Chandrika said.
Compost systems
The Corporation is willing to give away—free of cost—the organic waste from markets in the city. If any agency running, say, a pig-rearing centre or other agricultural enterprise, wishes to get the market-waste, it has to register with the Corporation. The corporation is working on a scheme to install ring-composting systems in all households, she said.
The BJP, meanwhile, has called for a hartal in the city on Monday in protest against what it termed the corporation's inaction on the garbage issue.
