KSU march turns violent

A demonstration taken out by activists of the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) to the Government Secretariat on Friday turned violent, leaving 10 persons injured.

The agitation was organised in protest against the alleged violence unleashed by the Students Federation of India (SFI) activists near the University of Kerala premises a few days ago.

Nearly 200 activists take part

Nearly 200 KSU activists took part in the protest march that commenced from the Martyrs’ Column at Palayam at 11.30 a.m. When the protesters attempted to break the barricade in front of the main gate of the Secretariat, the police used water cannon to disperse them. The police later resorted to lathi-charge when the agitators hurled stones.

KSU State president V.S. Joy; State general secretary Binu P. Chulliyil; and Syndicate member J.S. Akhil; were among those who were injured. The others included K.H. Harris, Vineeth, Sreedev Soman, Sadiq Ali, Vaishakh S. Sudarsanan and Shanib. The injured were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital and the General Hospital. The Cantonment police have registered a case in connection with the demonstration.
