KPCC president M. M. Hassan on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Governor P. Sathasivam seeking his intervention to get the Union Environment Ministry to withdraw the controversial livestock order related to cattle trade and marketing that virtually banned animal slaughter.

The petition was submitted as part of an agitation organised under the KPCC’s auspices in front of Raj Bhavan in protest against the Centre’s notification. In a statement later, Raj Bhavan said the Governor had forwarded Mr. Hassan’s plea to Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).

The KPCC president led a delegation comprising V.S. Sivakumar, Pandalam Sudhakaran, Saratchandra Prasad, DCC president Neyyatinkara Sanal and other office-bearers.

The petition said the livestock order was an abrogation of the people’s fight to their choice of food.

The notification issued without consulting the States amounted to undermining the federal structure of the country, not to mention its economic impact in terms of loss of jobs.

Hassan’s demand

Earlier, addressing the Congress demonstration, Mr. Hassan reiterated his party’s demand that the State government convene a special session of the Assembly to bring in a legislation to overcome the difficulties posed by the Union governemnt’s notification.
