Mayor K. Chandrika has said the newly installed e-toilet unit at the Kowdiar Park a significant step in improving the sanitation and health facilities in the city.
She was speaking during the inauguration of the first e-toilet set up by the city Corporation , in association with Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (KELTRON) and city-based Eram Scientific Solutions that designed the unit.
Similar units were installed within the Museum grounds and on premises of the Kanakakkunnu Palace over a year ago.
Spots identified
Corporation Works standing committee chairman V.S. Padmakumar, who presided over the inaugural function, said that 20 such units were initially envisaged by the Corporation and 10 spots had been identified for the purpose. “We plan to set up these toilets at the identified locations within three months,” he said.
He added that in the light of the garbage and sanitation problems faced by the city, a solution had been devised to provide people with clean toilet facilities. Sasthamangalam, Pettah, Palayam and Statue Junction are some of the locations where the units would be set up in the near future. “The public toilets in the city are notoriously unclean and unhygienic and thus people have reservations about using them. So such units, with automatic cleaning mechanisms, come as a real blessing especially for women,” said the Mayor.
The unit is made of stainless steel and fibreglass, which lie to rest worries of the structure getting corroded. The unit consists of automatic closet and platform cleaning mechanisms. On inserting a Rs. 2 coin, the sliding door of the unit opens. Clear instructions are also depicted on the unit. In addition, a sewage treatment system supplements the unit, with wastes taken care of minus any cost on public health.
The inside is fitted with lights and fan, controlled by sensors and hence functions only once a person enters the unit. A health faucet and even an FM player is installed, which according to the representatives of Eram Scientific, could be turned into a system that conveys public service messages by the government.
