Students of the credit and semester B.Com. programme of the University of Kerala would have heaved a collective sigh of relief on Monday. More than six months after these students sat for their fourth semester examinations, the university finally published the results.
Students of the BA and the B.Sc. programmes, though, will have to wait longer as it is not immediately clear if the fourth semester examination results of these courses will come out any time soon.
K. Madhukumar, Controller of Examinations, said the results of students from five colleges had been withheld as the college authorities concerned had not furnished the marks of the English paper to the university.
The regulations of the choice-based credit and semester system of the university stipulate that the results of the semester examinations must be published within 45 days of the conclusion of the said examinations. This rule is honoured more in the breach by the varsity. In this instance, the valuation camp for the fourth semester examinations began only in November 2013.
“Yes, there was a delay in commencing the camps,” Mr. Madhukumar told The Hindu . “The fourth semester being an internal semester, there sometimes is a reduced urgency on the valuation front. On the other hand, the valuation camp of the fifth semester examinations of these students, which were held in November, has concluded, and we expect to publish the results by mid-February,” he said.
Valuation campsMr. Madhukumar said the university introduced a crucial reform at the camps — after the first day when all teachers are expected to be present and conduct a sample valuation, they can take the answer papers home for evaluation at their convenience and pace.
This, the Controller said, ensured that more teachers turned up for the camps.
However, sources at the university involved in the tabulation of marks said the real losers owing to the delay in publishing the fourth semester results were those students who had cleared the sixth semester examinations in June but had to write one or more fourth semester improvement papers.
“Such students have now lost one year as they could not have gained admission to any course during these months,” one university official said. The official could not say how many students were so affected.
The university is yet to announce the results of the second semester BA, B.Sc., and B.Com. examinations held in July 2013, sources said.
