As many as 271 units have been started across the State for rearing chicken as part of Kudumbasree’s Kerala Chicken project.
Kerala Chicken has been launched in association with the Animal Husbandry Department and the Poultry Development Corporation (Kepco) with the aim of making quality chicken available to the people.
The first units were started in Thiruvananthapuram district on December 22.
Ernakulam has the maximum units now — 70. Kasaragod has 42 units.
Kudumbasree aims at starting 5,000 units in the State for rearing broiler chicken.
Each unit will have at least 1,000 birds. They will be ready for sale when they are 42 to 45 days old.
Chicks from Kepco
Kepco is providing the chicks for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta districts at the rate of ₹40 each. The agency will buy the them back when they are fully grown and weigh 2 kg by paying at ₹85 a kg.
