Kaliyoottu festival to conclude today

The ‘paranett’ ceremony which marks the end of the Kaliyoottu festival at the Major Sri Vellayani Devi temple was held at 10.15 p.m. on Tuesday.

During the ceremony, the Devi idol was placed on a raised platform at 40 ft height and the idol of Darikan was placed on another platform at 17.5 ft height. Till dawn, the two idols were kept there in a recreation of the night-long battle between the two.

At 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the two idols will be brought to the ground, in a recreation of the fight on land. Seven battles with different weapons will happen till afternoon. The arat will be held at the Vellayani lake at 5.30 p.m. The festivities will conclude when the Devi idol is taken inside the temple with Thalappoli between 10.35 p.m. and 11 p.m.

A photography exhibition showcasing various still photographs of the previous years’ festivities at the temple by photographer Kaladharan is being held at the sadyalayam. A farm and industrial produce fair is also being held near the temple premises.
