Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed on Sunday said it was the Left Democratic Front (LDF) that supported communal forces and not the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) as the LDF and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were trying to project.
He was inaugurating the delegates’ session of the State conference of the Muslim Students’ Federation (MSF) here. Mr. Ahamed said a few elements from the Muslim community, disgruntled over the fact that they were not able to find support for their extremist activities, were spreading canards against the IUML and that these elements had found support from the LDF, which in fact brought some of them to mainstream politics as well.
The IUML could not be termed communal, since it had always stood for unity and secularism, he said.
Stating that organisations such as the MSF were playing a major role in dispelling misplaced notions about the IUML and the Muslim community in general, Mr. Ahamed said an entire generation had forgotten to update themselves and get educated while fighting for the rights of society. That generation, to some extent, would have got provoked by such attempts to destabilise the IUML.
However, the situation had changed and the present generation was more focussed, he said.
