They have contributed to nation building with their technical prowess. Now the scientists of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have proved that arts and music too are within their grasp.

A group of scientists, employed in the Thiruvananthapuram centres of the ISRO, i.e., the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) and ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (ISRO), have come up a ‘patriotic music video’ under the banner of the Space Engineers Association.

The scientists are involved in all the aspects of the “I am an Indian” music video, including cinematography, orchestration, music, singing, editing and lyrics. The video is a project of the in-house music band ‘Rock@Band’ that performs at the cultural programmes of the association.

A creation of 21 ISRO employees, the music video aims at projecting national integration.

“Being music enthusiasts, we always aspired to do something different from our routine and official work. Through this, we wanted to convey the nation’s hallmarks of unity in diversity and harmony, as well as the future we dream of. Though our work is mainly in Malayalam, the video covers many Indian languages and the diverse cultures that make our country unique,” says Shiju Thomas, a scientist, who has composed the music and edited the video.

Shot in Muthalapozhy, the project was realised within a span of one-and-a-half years. The seven-minute-long video was formally released by eminent scientist S. Ramakrishnan, former director of VSSC and LPSC, on the sidelines of the Vikram A. Sarabhai Memorial Lecture that was held a few days ago. It has been uploaded on YouTube.
