Indian writing in English has come of age, offering an exciting world of stunning works to readers across the world, said noted writer Daman Singh.
Ms. Singh, who was here to participate in the third edition of the two-day Kovalam Literary Festival, told reporters on Saturday evening that Indian writing in English catered to a wide spectrum of readers across the world and had produced brilliant writers with enormous appeal like Salman Rushdie and Vikram Seth. Many have won international acclaim, like Arundhathi Roy who has a very powerful style. Their books are being published abroad too. “We have been reading foreign books, but now there are diverse kinds of works and it is really exciting,” she said.
Ms. Singh is getting ready for extensive research to write a personal biography of her father, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and their family. “It is not a political biography, but a personal one.” The book will require thorough research and would take time. Ms. Singh said she has great faith in her father and is sure that the policies being pursued by him will lead the nation in the right course of development and prosperity. “The signs are really encouraging. The needs of the common man are being met.” The policies and programmes have pulled India out of a grave economic crisis and put it on the path of growth. The improvement in health, education and other sectors is proof of the success of the policies adopted by the government, she said.
According to Ms. Singh, her father was one who responded to an opportunity when it came up. Having profound knowledge in economics, politics and other issues, he is prepared to take up any challenge. Even before becoming the Prime Minister, Dr. Singh has been very busy and the family is quite used to his schedule.
Ms. Singh has no interest in politics and has chosen to be a writer. The cuisine and the natural beauty of Kerala are things that attracted Ms. Singh on her maiden visit to the State.
