Autorickshaw drivers will soon be required to obtain identity cards being issued by the city Corporation.
The decision was taken at a traffic advisory committee convened at the Corporation on Friday.
In September last year, 10,000 cards were issued and an estimated 23,000 more drivers are yet to receive cards.
Keltron is in charge of issuing the cards. Once implemented, the scheme will help the public report erring drivers and vehicles without permits will be kept off Corporation limits.
The meeting also touched upon the construction of pre-paid auto counters at Thampanoor and Pettah railway stations. This project is listed in this year’s Corporation budget. General Hospital was one of the areas initially mooted but because of lack of space for setting up a counter, the Corporation decided on Thampanoor.
Officials requested traffic police personnel to help identify regions that could be turned into parking spaces.
Since a large ground for parking is unrealistic in a city pressed for space, the city Corporation is trying to identify smaller plots such as spaces beneath flyovers.
