Host of events for Environment Day

Political parties too will take part in the celebrations

A wide array of programmes have been lined up to mark the World Environment Day in the district on Monday.

The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment will hold a function at the Science and Technology Museum. Poet-activist Sugathakumari will release reports prepared on the quality of water in rivers in the State.

Saying it with stamps

The Department of Posts will launch a special cover in connection with the celebrations at the Thiruvananthapuram General Post Office (GPO). A philatelic exhibition and philatelic quiz will also be conducted.

The Thiruvananthapuram South Postal Division will plant saplings in vacant plots owned by the department at Kattakada, Vithura, Pacha, Aryanad, Venganoor, Vizhinjam, Balaramapuram and Poovar post offices.

A special function will also be held at the Kattakada post office.

Traders’ contribution

Traders in the district under the aegis of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi will observe Suchitwa Hartal clean-up drive from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The Kerala Gazetted Officers Federation will organise a sapling planting and distribution drive at the District Livestock Farm in Kudappanakunnu.

Eco get-together

Political parties have also decided to chip in with their efforts. The Communist Party of India (CPI) will mark the observance with party State secretary Kanam Rajendran inaugurating a programme at the M.N. Smarakam.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president M.M. Hassan will launch an ‘environmental get-together’ under the aegis of the KPCC Gandhi Haritha Samrudhi at Indira Bhavan.

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), feeder organisations of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), will plant saplings and construct rainwater pits as part of the observance.

150-year-old tree

The Chala Government UP School in Aryasala, will observe the World Environment Day by constructing a rainwater pit and ‘honouring’ a 150-year-old mango tree, among other activities. A. Sampath, MP, will inaugurate the programme organised under the aegis of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). St. Mary’s School, Pattom, will launch ‘Jala Jagratha Varsham,’ a year-long drive, on the day. Forest Minister K. Raju will inaugurate the initiative. The celebrations at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Cotton Hill, Vazhuthacaud, are being organised jointly by the Haritha Kerala Mission and the State Bank of India.

Actor Mohanlal will inaugurate the observance at St. Xavier’s College in Thumba by planting a sapling. Cardinal Mar Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, Major Archbishop of Thiruvananthapuram of the Syro Malankara Church, will inaugurate the celebrations organised by the Malankara Social Service Society at the Major Archbishop’s House in Pattom.

Green Audit

Former diplomat T.P. Sreenivasan will inaugurate an observance organised by the Gandhi Global Foundation at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club. A Green Audit will be conducted at the Manaveeyam Veedhi to assess the condition of the trees planted on the stretch, widely regarded as the cultural corridor of the city. A get-together of cultural activists will also be held.

Green Marathon

Around 600 people are expected to participate in the Green Marathon that will be organised from Kowdiar Palace gate junction to Kanakkakunnu Palace under the aegis of Uday Samudra.

An exhibition of photographs and paintings by five women artists on the theme of ecological conservation will be organised by Sahithi at the Kerala Lalithakala Art Gallery, Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan. Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar will inaugurate the programme.

Trivandrum Club has planned various programmes, including tree planting and a seminar on ‘Green Protocol and Domestic Waste Management.’ Former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman G. Madhavan Nair will participate in the programme.
