High wave alert in Kerala

May 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:07 am IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

Reports about abnormally high waves lashing the Papanasam beach in Varkala near here on Thursday evening triggered concern in the coastal area.

The police said high waves had been reported from the coast at around 5 p.m. but the phenomenon had later subsided.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a high wave alert for Kerala, Lakshadweep, south Tamil Nadu, and Nicobar Islands. Strong winds and high swell waves in the range of 1.5 to 1.6 metres are likely all along the Kerala coast from Vizhinjam to Kasaragod from 5.30 a.m. on May 1 to 11.30 p.m. on May 2. Fishermen are advised to be cautious while venturing out to sea.
