In three months' time, the capital city will have a green corridor for pedestrians with space for exhibitions and fairs and children's play areas.
Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran on Tuesday inaugurated the Haritha Veedhi project on the Kowdiar-Peroorkada pipeline road. Speaking on the occasion, he said development of infrastructure should take environmental concerns into account. Mr. Premachandran said the project was expected to be a model.
Presiding over the function, Law Minister M. Vijayakumar said the Haritha Veedhi would be opened to the public in three months.
Forest Minister Benoy Viswom, Mayor C. Jayan Babu and poet and environmental activist Sugathakumari were the chief guests at the function.
The road will be developed as an exclusive pedestrian zone. The project will utilise Rs.30 lakh from Mr. Vijayakumar's constituency development fund and Rs.20 lakh from the city Corporation. Designed by Habitat Technology, the project will be implemented by the Kerala Water Authority, the city Corporation and the Forest Department.
Deputy Mayor V. Jayaprakash, councillors and officials were present at the inaugural function.
