Gusty winds uproot trees

June 07, 2013 12:56 pm | Updated 12:56 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Strong winds that swept the city by Thursday noon uprooted trees in several areas, causing road blocks and traffic jams. No casualties were reported.

The Fire and Rescue Services control room in the city received 35 distress calls from across the district, of which nine were from the city.

The other calls, the officials said, came from Nedumangad and Poovar, where fire engines from nearby stations were despatched to.

In and around the city, roads were blocked after uprooted trees fell across the road near the University Stadium gate, near the General Hospital junction, the Idapally-Kochar road, at Poomalliyoorkonam near Peroorkada, and near the Law Academy. Traffic jams could be cleared only after trees were removed with help from the police and local people.

A coconut tree fell on top of a house near Vellayambalam while a tree fell on a car parked in the Railway parking lot on the Power House side. Trees in the Central Jail compound were uprooted.

Two trees that were uprooted near the Forest Office in PTP Nagar partially blocked traffic for nearly an hour.
