Green Milk, an initiative of the district panchayat to provide fresh cow milk free of preservatives, was launched in the city on Tuesday.

The sale of Green Milk, through a pavilion set up at Vikas Bhavan, was inaugurated by Minister for Animal Husbandry K. Raju.

Fresh milk will be available here from 4 p.m, besides eggs from the Kudappanakkunnu poultry farm.

Mobile unit

Milk will also be available from a mobile unit on the Peroorkada district hospital premises and the district panchayat office premises at Pattom at 3 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. respectively.

District panchayat president V.K. Madhu presided. District panchayat members V. Vijumohan, S.M. Rasi, district panchayat secretary K. Chandrasekharan Nair, and AHD Director Sasi attended.

From Vithura farm

The local body is planning to open more counters once milk from its Vithura jersey farm reaches the market, says Mr. Nair. At present, nearly 1,200 litres of milk from the farm at Chettachal is frozen at 4 degree Celsius, packed under the label of the district panchayat, and sold at ₹23 for half a litre, daily.

The milk, also sold in Vithura and Nedumangad, has seen great demand as it is fresh and free from preservatives, Mr. Nair says. “It stays unspoilt for 4-5 hours,” he says. Weak demand from rural areas is a reason for the local body deciding to concentrate on the city. Milk from the Vithura farm is expected to reach the city next week.
