Goods seized at Amaravila check-post

October 08, 2013 12:54 pm | Updated 12:54 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Officials at the Amaravila check-post on the State border seized consumer goods worth over Rs.8 lakh that were being illegally transported on a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Bus towards Thiruvananthapuram early on Monday.

Officials at the check-post said the goods were found in the rear compartment of the Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram bus during a regular inspection around 3 a.m.

With none of the passengers on the bus staking a claim and the documents showing that the goods could be transported only up to Madurai, the packages were off-loaded and kept at the check-post. A notice was issued to the driver seeking a security deposit of Rs.1.2 lakh.

Officials said the notice would be hopefully passed over to whoever came to take possession of the packages at Thampanoor. The goods included readymade garments worth about Rs.3.5 lakh, medicines worth Rs.3 lakh, electronic appliances including scanners and printers worth about Rs.2 lakh, and cosmetics. The exact value of the goods was yet to be ascertained, officials said.
