A burglar broke into a house near the Kaniyapuram railway station in the Mangalapuram police station limits here early Thursday and decamped with over 10 sovereigns of gold and Rs.3,500 in cash.
The police said the incident was reported from the house of Raheeda.
Her aged parents and grandmother were the only people present there. They heard a sound around 3 a.m. and were said to have seen a person rushing out of their room, leaving the almirah open.
They later found that the burglar had taken the ornaments and cash after gaining entry into the house by breaking the lock of a door near the kitchen.
Key used
However, the almirah, which the old couple said was locked, was found to have been opened with a key, the police said.
The couple alerted their neighbours, who called the police. The police inspected the house and left, saying they would return in the morning.
However, around 6 a.m., the couple heard another noise, and on examination, found a diary and a box containing a few fancy ornaments that had gone missing from the house placed on the compound wall near the kitchen.
The police said it was suspected that the burglar could have returned and left these items on the wall after the police party had left.
Forensic experts collected evidence and an investigation was on.
