The Global Village on the sprawling grounds of the Lulu Convention Centre on Bolgatty Island in Kochi has become a magnet for shoppers, tourists and families looking for a fun-filled outing this holiday season.
The Village, set up as part of the ongoing sixth season of the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival (GKSF), attracted hundreds on Sunday to what is billed as the biggest international trade fair the State has ever seen. For many, the attraction was in the one-stop shopping destination.
The nearly 400 stalls in six pavilions on 24 acres of land showcase an array of products and services and art, culture and traditions from around the country and the world. Entry was free on Sunday. Six thematic pavilions – International, National, Kerala, Consumer, Brand and Weaves — and a food pavilion with over 40 stalls are part of the village, besides amusement activities, 3D and 4D shows and the Magic World.
A Kids’ Talent Zone meant for children in the five-12 age group to showcase their creative skills is another highlight. Be it singing, dancing or recitation, children can stage their talents between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on all days.
Exciting water-front activities, including speed-boat rides and a dinner cruise, have been arranged at the Village. On Monday, a video game arcade will be open to the visitors. Cultural programmes by artistes from Thailand will be staged from 7 p.m.
Fireworks lit up the evening sky as Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the Global Village on Saturday. In his inaugural address, the Chief Minister said the GKSF was a decisive step for Kerala as it brought together all sectors for the productive good of the State.
Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, K.V. Thomas, who was the chief guest at the function, announced that the Union government would allocate Rs. 25 lakh for the GKSF.
