Animal Care, Trivandrum (ACT), a united initiative of three NGOs involved in animal welfare activities, is organising an adoption day here on August 31 (Saturday) to find homes for stray puppies, kittens and adult dogs. The programme will be held at the District Veterinary Centre and Hospital at PMG Junction here from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A joint pressnote issued here by People for Animals (PFA), Raksha and Stray Dog Watch said the animals adopted at the camp would be vaccinated against rabies and sterilised, free of cost. The persons adopting the animals would have to fill up a form and produce proof of address with photo.
The pressnote said there would be follow up activity, with periodic house visits to ensure that the adopted animals were being taken care of. This, it added, would be an opportunity for ACT to study the results of the programme and make improvements.
The first adoption day conducted by ACT on June 2 at the Kanakakunnu Palace grounds had received a good response with 67 animals finding homes. The pressnote said the event was being organised to control the number of stray animals, encourage the adoption of Indian dogs over exotic breeds and to create awareness of sterilisation for population control and vaccination to prevent zoonotic diseases.
Raksha is a group of young IT professionals at Infosys here involved in animal welfare activities. The PFA operates an animal shelter at Valiyarathala. Stray Dog Watch is a charitable society based at Kovalam that has been sterilising and finding homes for stray dogs.
