With local bodies across the State struggling to cope with the mounting garbage problem, the government has launched a new initiative to promote decentralised methods of solid waste management using existing and alternative technologies.
Suchitwa Mission, an agency under the Government of Kerala, is organising two major programmes for the purpose. The first is a one-day workshop for heads of Corporations and municipalities. Scheduled to be held at the Government Guest House, Thycaud, on Monday, the workshop is aimed at creating awareness about the need to find a mechanism for disposal of garbage at source.
Minister for Urban Affairs P.K. Kunhalikutty will inaugurate the workshop at a function to be presided over by Minister for Panchayats M.K. Muneer. Mayors of five Corporations and Jamal Manacaud, chairman of the Chamber of Municipal Chairpersons, are scheduled to participate.
The second programme is a demonstration- cum- workshop on indigenous waste treatment technologies to be held on October 31 and November 1 at the VJT Hall here.
The programme is organised as part of a search for better and viable indigenous options for waste treatment in a decentralised manner. Individuals, agencies, and NGOs with experience and expertise in the sector have been invited to participate in the workshop with their technologies.
Expert team
An expert team will evaluate the performance of the technologies presented at the workshop.
The shortlisted technologies would be popularised during the year-long sanitation campaign to be taken up by the mission, a release issued here said.
Interested participants are invited to register themselves at Suchitwa Mission (Executive Director, Suchitwa Mission, Panavila Junction, Thiruvananthapuram – 695014).
