Ganesh idols to be immersed tomorrow

The 10-day Ganeshostav 2011, organised by the Ganeshotsav Trust in the capital, will come to an end on Saturday with the immersion of the 1,000-odd Ganesh idols installed in various parts of the district at Sanghumughom Arattukadavu.

On September 10, the idols installed in various places in the district since September 1 will be taken in small processions and will reach East Fort by 3 p.m.

The cultural meeting being organised as part of the closing ceremony of the Ganeshotsav will commence at East Fort at 3.30 p.m.

Chairman of the Trust Subahmaniam Kumar and other office-bearers told a press conference here on Thursday that the former Chief Minister of Karnataka H. D. Kumaraswamy would inaugurate the cultural meeting.

Actors Karthika and Radha will be the chief guests at the function.

Mayor K. Chandrika, legislators, religious leaders and leaders from various walks of life will participate.

Later, Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, head of the erstwhile ruling family of Travancore, will inaugurate the procession by lighting the traditional lamp at 5 p.m.

The procession from Pazhavangadi carrying the 1,000-odd idols will move to Sanghumughom to the accompaniment of ‘panchavadyam,' ‘sinkarimelam,' ‘chenda melam,' ‘pookavadi,' ‘pandimelam' and ‘theyyam.'

After the rituals, the idols will be immersed in the Arabian sea.
