National Games as scheduled: Chandy

January 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 10:50 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has ruled out any change in the National Games schedule and described reports about plans to defer it as baseless.

Mr. Chandy told a post-Cabinet news briefing here on Wednesday that preparations for the games were progressing as per the schedule and concerns raised about the preparedness were unfounded. Works on the stadia were nearing completion and finishing touches were being given.

The railway overbridge that leads to the Games Village will be completed by January 30, but he has demanded to complete the work by January 27 itself. News reports about the games were baseless.

The government was ready to look into any complaint about the conduct of the games, he said.

Asked about the delay in ferrying the sports equipment, Mr. Chandy said that in the wake of the allegations levelled about the Commonwealth Games, the State government had decided to uncompromisingly observe official procedures in all purchases and hence there was delay in getting the equipment, but it would be redressed. An Indian Olympic Association team which inspected the venues two months ago had expressed its satisfaction in the way the preparations were being made.

The Chief Minister said that he had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the games. President Pranab Mukherjee will not be able to attend the inauguration since he was indisposed. Mr. Chandy earlier released the video of the games theme song.
