April 11, 2010 05:07 pm | Updated 05:07 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Four temporary waiting sheds are to be constructed on the Aristo-Thampanoor-Overbridge stretch for commuters waiting to board the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and other buses that arrive at the Central bus station at Thampanoor.

A meeting chaired by V. Sivankutty, MLA, here on Saturday decided to construct the four waiting sheds in view of the problems faced by the commuters following the demolition of the bus shelters and a building at the Central bus station for construction of a modern bus terminal.

The existing bus shelters near the RMS on the Thampanoor-Overbridge stretch will be integrated and converted into one that is more spacious. The second waiting shed will come up near Hotel Chaithram, the third one near the Thampanoor police station on the road leading from Thampanoor to Aristo junction and the fourth one near the earlier KSRTC building.

Review meet

It was decided that the waiting sheds will be completed before May 24. A review meeting has been convened on April 24 and the work on the sheds will begin that day after completing all the formalities.

The KSRTC will depute officials at all the waiting sheds for the benefit of the commuters. Huge display boards indicating the destinations to where the buses will ply will be installed at the sheds. A public address system will also be installed so that the arrival and departure of the buses can be heard in all the four sheds.

Tubelights will be installed in the sheds by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and the City Corporation to light them up at night and check the activities of anti-social elements.

Display boards indicating the waiting sheds and the destinations to where the buses will ply will be installed at the Ponnara Sreedhar Park facing the railway station to help those getting down at the Thiruvananthapuram Central station to board buses.

Councillors; Assistant Commissioner, Fort, B. Varghese; officials of the KSRTC, the KSEB, the city Corporation, the Public Works Department, Kerala Transport Development Finance Corporation Ltd. that is constructing the terminal complex and representatives of political parties and residents associations' in the area participated.
