April 10, 2013 05:13 pm | Updated July 01, 2016 12:29 pm IST - Thiruvananthapuram:

At least four prisoners were injured, one seriously, when a group of convicts and undertrials clashed inside the Central Prison precincts here on Tuesday.

The police identified the seriously injured person as Tatha Binu. He is serving time in several cases, including robbery. The Kattakada police had earlier charged him with destroying the property of the local magistrate’s court when he felt that the judicial officer was deliberately delaying the consideration of his case.

Fractures

Officials said Binu sustained fractures on his limbs and head. It required 22 stitches to staunch the flow of blood from a deep gash on his head, they said.

The clash occurred at 1.45 p.m. between the seventh and eighth blocks of the prison. The space had been earmarked for erecting solar panels.

The other persons involved in the fight were identified as Ayub Khan, who is serving time for murder; Vava Suresh, a convict in the Kannadi Shaji gangland murder case, and Vineet, an undertrial.

Detailed report soon

The Poojappura police have registered a case in connection with the incident. The Central Prison authorities are expected to file a detailed report.

The injured persons have been admitted to various hospitals and are under police guard.
