Focus on improving standards and increasing enrolment

: The city Corporation is now focussing its attention on improving the standards of its nine pre-schools and increase enrolment. As part of this, the civic body will soon introduce breakfast in all the pre-schools. Also in the works are plans to improve the infrastructure facilities in these pre-schools, which have faced much neglect in the past.

According to S.Unnikrishnan, Education standing committee chairman of the city Corporation, the preliminary works for the breakfast programme have begun.

“We have been planning to introduce breakfast in the pre-schools ever since the new council took over, but it got delayed due to the elections. The State government is providing the facility from class 1 onwards. So we thought we will take the responsibility for pre-schools,”he said.

The work on building a kitchen has begun in two pre-schools. In the past year, the civic body has improved the infrastructure facilities in pre-schools, especially in the ‘model’ pre-school at Kuriyathi and the one at Vallakkadavu.

“We have spruced up the old buildings, constructed compound walls and built new toilets. There was also a shortage of teachers. This has been filled to some extent, with 10 new appointments this year. This has reflected in the sharp increase in new enrolments this year, with the number of students doubling in both these schools ,” said Mr. Unnikrishnan.
