With a view to preventing flooding at East Fort, the government will construct a storm water drainage channel from Pazhavangady to the Thekkanamkara canal, Health Minister and local MLA V.S. Sivakumar has said.

He was speaking after inspecting the ongoing road widening scheme at East Fort under the City Roads Improvement Project here on Monday.

The drainage channel will be built by the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB).

A new, temporary bus bay will be set up at East Fort near the existing facility. Traffic in front of the Pazhavangady temple will be regulated. For this, a high-level meeting involving the Ministers for transport and Public Works Department will be convened.

Flooding of SS Kovil Road will be tackled by laying an underground pipeline parallel to the railway line from Thampanoor to the Uppidamoodu bridge. This work will be included in the Kerala State Urban Development Project.

Sewerage connection

Mr. Sivakumar on Monday directed the Kerala Water Authority to prepare an estimate for providing sewerage connections to 100 houses at Kuriathy, in the Mani Memorial road area.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for a project to provide parallel sewerage connections to houses in Pavithra Nagar. This scheme is being funded by Mr. Sivakumar’s Asset Creation Funds.

At the Kuriathy sewage pumping station, four dormant pump sets will be replaced. In the first phase, a fresh, imported pump will be installed at a cost of Rs.50 lakh. This pump will be made operational before the Attukal Pongala. Later, three more pumps will be installed at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore. These works are intended at making Kuriathy a sewerage/garbage-free area.

Similarly, Rs.2.44 crore has been sanctioned for the refurbishment of the sewerage network at Pettah, Chakka, and Palkulangara.
