There was excitement in the air as kites raced the skies with one another at the Barrier-Free International Kite Festival, organised by Kerala Tourism, Responsible Tourism Mission and the NGO Helping Hands Organisation (H2O) at Kovalam on Sunday.

The event marked the entry of the Responsible Tourism Mission in its campaign to promote the concept of accessible tourism initiative.

A large number of kite-flying enthusiasts from United Kingdom, United States and Malaysia, besides those from other Indian States including Gujarat, Chandigarh and Karnataka participated in the event.

Differently abled children, including those with autism, were brimming with joy, as kites of diverse shapes and sizes flew in the sky. Many tourists also made a beeline to buy kites and take part in the fest. Planned as a fund-raising event, the funds received will be directed towards efforts being undertaken by H2O for the welfare of children with autism and other learning and behavioural disorders.
