The district administration will constitute five squads to implement effectively the prohibitory orders passed by the District Collector to combat the spread of communicable diseases in the city.
This was decided at an emergency meeting chaired by District Collector K.N. Satheesh here on Monday.
The Revenue Deputy Collector, Deputy Commissioner for Police, Food Safety Officer, Corporation Health Officer, and District Medical Officer will head these squads. Each squad will submit a daily report to the district administration.
The meeting authorised the Thiruvananthapuram tahsildar to organise ‘mike announcements’ in the city to spread the word on the Collector’s prohibitory orders.
Garbage issue
Corporation Health Officer D. Sreekumar told the meeting that the wanton disposal of garbage on the roads could be controlled to some extent if stringent action was initiated against those caught throwing garbage.
Deputy Collector John V. Samuel said the order enforcing Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure would be implemented effectively once the squads started functioning. At least two civil police officers should be made part of each squad, he said.
District Medical Officer T. Peethambaran told the meeting that there was bound to be an outbreak of communicable diseases in the city if garbage was not disposed of in a proper manner.
In his address, Assistant Commissioner in the Narcotic Cell N. Janardhanan said a permanent solution to the garbage problem could be found only if awareness was generated among the people.
