Fisherman killed as boat capsizes off Poovar

A fisherman who was on his way home on board a newly purchased fishing boat and engine was killed after the boat got caught in strong waves and capsized off the Poovar coast here on Tuesday. Two others who were with him escaped with injuries.

The Poovar police said Saji Cleetus, 42, of Kottappuram, near Vizhinjam, had set sail towards Vizhinjam from Muttam in Tamil Nadu early Tuesday after purchasing the boat and engine. He was accompanied by David and Shibu. Around 6.15 p.m., as the boat crossed the Poovar coast, it was caught in rough waves and overturned, killing Saji on the spot. David and Shibu managed to swim ashore but sustained injuries on being hit by the boat during the accident. The body of Saji has been shifted to the Neyyattinkara Government Hospital morgue.
