Ensure upkeep of e-toilets: Collector

Says legal action will be taken against agencies concerned if e-toilets are not repaired within a month.

Maintenance work must immediately be carried out on women-friendly e-toilets set up in different parts of city as several are in a faulty condition, District Collector Biju Prabhakar has said.

He said that legal action will be taken against the Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation and Keltron, the agencies responsible for the installation of the e-toilets, if the machines are not repaired within one month.

The Collectorate has received several complaints saying that many of the e-toilets have been installed in the heart of crowded places and junctions, causing women to feel uncomfortable about using them, going against the ‘women-friendly’ brand of these toilets, a press release here said.

Mr. Prabhakar himself inspected a few toilets. He fed Rs.5 into the e-toilet set up next to the Museum police station but the door did not open. The money was not returned either. This particular machine is more of a hindrance to pedestrian and vehicular traffic at the especially busy junction, the Collector noted.

He asked for clarifications on whether any agency is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of the machines. In case there is no such organisation in place, the details of every e-toilet in the city should be given to him, Mr. Prabhakar said.
