Ensure children's rights: Muneer

August 21, 2011 02:44 pm | Updated 02:44 pm IST - THIRUVANATHAPURAM:

The State Government should form a Commission to check violation of children's rights, Minister for Social Welfare M.K. Muneer has said. He was inaugurating a seminar on ‘Balyam vazhithirivil' (Childhood at crossroads) organised by the Department of Sociology, University of Kerala, here on Saturday.

The problems encountered by children are many.

There had been no major progress in the setting up of a Commission to ensure child rights, he said.

Many children had been denied their basic rights in society in spite of the development made.

Therefore, it was necessary for an independent body to focus its work on ensuring child rights.

The present United Democratic Front government was committed to forming the Commission, he said.

The function was presided over by A. Jayakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kerala.
