The Public Works Department (PWD) has entrusted the District Collector to evict all encroachers on the footpath in the 42-km stretch that is being developed under the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP).
According to the PWD authorities, the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) had served legal notices on eight persons, including construction companies, for encroaching into the road. The PWD had asked the district administration to shift those running Milma booths to appropriate place.
Pattom-Kowdiar road
The Pattom-Kowdiar road will be completed by June 20. The KWA pipes lying in the Pattom-Marappalam stretch and carrying water to the Medical College Hospital and other places is now the main hurdle for completing the work along the stretch. The pipes are not that deep enough and the road cannot be dug up for laying the sewerage line and other works. To overcome this, the authorities are now raising the road in the stretch to prevent damage to the KWA pipes.
Sasthamangalam road
The Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam road will be completed before June 15. The tarring work will be completed this month itself and the footpath and other works will be completed within two weeks. The six-lane road will have a two-metre tiled footpath on both sides. There will be three carriageways on both sides. According to the authorities, the footpath is being constructed in such a way that even the physically challenged can move along in wheel chairs and the public can take trolleys.
As per the Indian Road Congress, crossings should be provided only after every one km in the six-lane roads. However, the authorities have given two crossings in the Vellayamablam-Sasthamangalam stretch that is 1,100 metres for enabling motorists to cross over.
