Electrify all schools: child rights panel

The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has given directions for electrification of all schools in the State.

In its direction to the General Education Department Additional Chief Secretary and Director, the commission said required number of tube lights and fans should be installed in schools.

Directions should also be issued making it mandatory for first aid boxes and fire extinguishers to be installed in buses. Ties and socks should not be made mandatory in schools in summer. School assemblies should not last more than 15 minutes. Assemblies should be held under a roof or in cool places.

Ramps and rail should be installed in schools to enable differently abled children to reach classrooms.

Steps should be taken to make available to them textbooks and audio textbooks in time, a full bench of the commission comprising member Shoba Koshy and members K. Nazeer and Fr. Philip Parakatt said.The directives came on a complaint by G.V. Hari of Thiruvananthapuram.
