EIA nod for fishing harbour project

The government has accorded sanction for the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) necessary for setting up a fishing harbour at Valiathura in the city, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Wednesday.

He was speaking after inaugurating the model ‘Matsyagramam' scheme designed for the holistic development of the fisheries sector at Kochuthoppu here.

“The government will construct 284 houses at each Matsyagramam. The Centre, State, and NGOs need to pitch in to build houses for the thousands of homeless fisherfolk in the State,” he said.

The government has earmarked Rs.50 crore for putting in place facilities including water supply, sanitation, and power to the 25-odd Matsyagramams which would be set up. At the model villages infrastructure facilities, facilities for the fishing industry, and the social sector would be set up at a cost of Rs.160 crore.

Model villages would be set up at Ajanoor, Azhikode, Marad, Thanoor, Kaypamangalam, Chellanam, Thrikkunnappuzha, Arattupuzha, Puthenthura, Valiathura, and Anappuzha.

In his address, Transport Minister V.S. Sivakumar said the government had sanctioned Rs.125 crore just for the development of coastal roads.
