The 38th Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) Regional Science Exhibition took off at Kendriya Vidyalaya Pattom in the city on Wednesday.
As many as 600 students representing 60 schools from the KVS Chennai region are participating in the two-day exhibition titled ‘Science and technology for challenges in life.’
Chief Conservator of Forest K.P. Ouseph inaugurated the exhibition at a function presided over by KV Pattom Principal C.P. Kumaran.
The exhibition includes static and working models prepared by high school and higher secondary school students in six different sub-themes including biodiversity, agriculture, green energy, transport and communication, community health and environment and mathematical modelling.
While conservation of biodiversity has been the main theme of focus of most models in the biodiversity section, effects of global warming, climate change and working models suggesting plausible solutions for air and water pollutions dominate the displays in the environment section.
Models for prevention of acid rain, oil slick removers, aerobic purification of sewage water, demonstration of making paper from litter and dried leaves and samples of endangered medicinal plants are among the displays in the biodiversity and environment sections.
Automatic pill dispenser, a machine meant for the aged and disabled to remind them and deliver pills at pre-set timings prepared by Sushanth T of KV Pattom is an interesting display in community health section. Also in this section is a display and demonstration of an organic soap made from the aerial part of banana by Letty L. George of KV Adoor.
A water rocket that works on the principle of Newton’s third law, made by J. Elva Rose of KV Thrissur is another crowd-puller at the exhibition. A multipurpose agriculture implement that can carry out weeding, ploughing, sowing, irrigation, levelling and grove making at the same time is among the displays in the agriculture section of the exhibition. A working model of this implement has been made by Akhil P.V. of KV Port Trust.
The best exhibits will be given away prizes by Water Resources Department Principal Secretary L. Radhakrishnan at the valedictory function to be held on Thursday. Winners will represent the Chennai region at the national level exhibition to be held in Hyderabad in October. A quiz competition related to science and technology will be held on Thursday.
